Infos for Kalamata

The
Marvelous
City
A charismatic state
Kalamata - the capital and central port of Messinia - is revealed to us in the innards of the Messinian Gulf, probably founded on the site of the Homeric city of Farai. The shadow of Taygetos, the endless silver and gold olive groves that touch the shore and an endless beach paint with the most beautiful colors of the charismatic state. Thanks to the products of the fertile Messinian land (oil, raisins, figs, etc.), it developed into a rich urban center and an important port. It is 238 km SW of Athens.

Tour in the city

The reference point of the charming big city is the legendary "castle of Izambo" that comes to life every summer thanks to the renowned International Dance Festival. The Castle with the panoramic view is built on the site of the acropolis of Fara. It was built in the 13th c. by William Villardwin and underwent subsequent additions and alterations by the Venetians and Turks. At the foot of the castle is the semi-cave church of Ag. Ioannou which is dated back to post-Byzantine times.
